Another Year Gone By (Part 2)

So just in case you guys missed Part 1—here’s the link to it. If you’ve already read it, you may recall that in the first part of 2011, I met a man, I lost a grandparent, I returned to church, and I moved in with that very same man. That’s more than some people experience in 7 years, and I had all of that go down in the first 7ish months of this year.

I really just typed all of that to keep you guys waiting with bated breath. Did it work? Stop holding your breath already. Here it is. I present you with the things that happened in the last 5 months of 2011.

I got a new job. After 4 years at a newspaper, which was 2 too many—I finally got out. Alive. You can read about that fiasco here. Now I’m actually doing something that most college graduates can’t say. I’m working in something that has to do with what I actually majored in! I spend my days talking to college coaches, updating websites, and writing press releases. And you know what? I love it.

I went on a vacation with a man. I’m discounting previous spring breaks here—because this trip was a cruise with just me and my guy. And we made it back alive, which should impress those of you who have stayed in an interior cabin of a cruise ship. It was a blast though, and marked not only our first trip together—but the first cruise either of us had been on. We’d go again, but we’re taking friends next time. That way he has someone to hang out with when I get motion sick on the catamaran.

I witnessed two of the greatest football games I’ve ever seen. I’m not going to recap the games because I already wrote blogs about them. The Iowa/Iowa State game went three overtimes which is pretty uncommon these days, and the Iowa State/Oklahoma State game was surreal. Absolutely surreal. The common factor between these two games? Iowa State won both of them.

I found out I’m going to be an aunt. I’m kind of ashamed to admit that when I first learned this I wasn’t jumping for joy because my selfishness of wanting to be the first of my siblings to have a baby got in the way. Now, I couldn’t be more excited. I’M GOING TO BE AN AUNT! And probably a godmother—assuming MY aunt doesn’t succeed in paying off my sister.

I took a man home for Christmas. Are you noticing a common denominator here? Our Christmases went off without a hitch—even with going to three different ones on Christmas Day. Our families are pretty amazing, so that helps. This was the first Christmas I’ve ever had to split time with someone else’s family and I was a tad bit apprehensive about it—but now, I look forward to Christmases from here on out going just like this one.

So there you have it folks. The highlights of my 2011. And it’s funny because LAST year at this time—I never would have imagined that any of these things were in the works, which really makes you stop and wonder what next year at this time is going to bring. Don’t wonder TOO much though, because if you get all caught up in wondering about the future, you’re going to miss the present. Now to really drive my point home, I’m going to end this blog the same way I started yesterday’s, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around for a little while, you might just miss it.”

Happy New Year!
