Hashtags, and Tweets, and Mentions…Oh My!

I need to tell you guys something and I REALLY hope that what I’m about to tell you doesn’t destroy the relationship we have. Okay. Wow. This is harder than I thought it would be. All right. I’m just going to throw it out there and hopefully confessing this to you doesn’t make you cringe, or worse, doesn’t cause you to judge me. I hate being judged. Especially if it’s going to end up like that one time when I was in the county fair queen contest. What a crock. Sorry…when I’m nervous I ramble and when I’m scared to tell someone something I change the subject. Okay. Seriously. Here it is.

My name is Stephanie and I’m addicted to Twitter. It’s been 4 minutes since my last tweet.

There it is. Whew. We good still?

About a year ago I opened a Twitter account, tweeted once, and ended up deleting the account a week later. So a couple months after I started this blog, I decided I’d try again. Rumor had it I could get word out to a lot of people about this very blog, and Twitter could do this, and Twitter could do that. Whatever. I added a few people, got a few followers, and then would post my blog’s shortlinks on there. In fact some of you may actually be reading this courtesy of Twitter.

It wasn’t until about a week ago that I FINALLY got swept up into the Twitter phenomenon. I’ve become the social media person at my new job and after an hour meeting with one of our design guys I decided that Twitter is WAY cooler than I originally thought. I used to think it was a dumbed down version of Facebook and all you could do was update your status. Wrong-o bucko.

I didn’t understand the @mentions, or what RT meant (it means retweet), or what the hell it meant when someone wrote something with the number sign in front of it (those are hashtags and are actually pretty effective).

NOW, thanks to that meeting and my nerdy Twitter expert friend Jordan (he’s a self-proclaimed nerd–I can call him that), I’m giving shoutouts to coaches and athletic programs around the country, I’m getting shoutouts back, I’m retweeting, and I’m hashtagging the shit out of my own tweets. And you know what? I can’t stop. I’ll start on something else for awhile here at work, but then I start shaking and I get the sweats and the only thing besides more cowbell that will help, is me opening up Twitter.

I suppose that so long as it doesn’t interfere with other things it’s okay. And I am trying to drum up more business at work, so it’s time well spent. Most of the time.

So I have an addiction. It’s not my only one, and probably not my worst one. But it’s definitely my most nerdy one–and I’m down with that because nerds are SO in right now. If we were at an AA meeting for real right now, we’d close with the serenity prayer. However, all this talk about Twitter has made me want to tweet. Right now. So I’ll just hashtag it and call it good. #serenityprayer
