Songs of Summer

Well. It’s official.  Here in Iowa we’ve gone from complaining about how cold it is, to complaining about how hot it is. As of 3pm this afternoon it’s 92 degrees outside, which I’m PRETTY sure sets a record for this day in June. Here’s the thing though. It’s summer! It’s the season that we all talk about for five months when we’re shoveling snow and then when it finally gets here, all we can do is complain about it.

Those of us who live in Iowa, or maybe even the Midwest as a whole, are lucky enough to live somewhere that actually has all four seasons. Some Midwesterners may not see it the same way, but I happen to like the fact that I live somewhere that still happens.

So in honor of it being the first day it’s REALLY felt like summer here, I’m putting six summer-esque songs down below. For those of you who have decided you hate the sun and can’t beat the summertime blues (no…that song is not on the list…fun haters), rock out inside with your air conditioning–but know that your electricity bill is going to be higher. For those of you who are embracing the sun and all its glory, download the songs and bust a move on your patio–but leave room for the sun haters. You never know when they may get tired of staying inside and acting like vampires.

So here they are, in no particular order. Summer it up man! Five months from now the vicious cycle of us wishing summer were back starts all over! Enjoy your weekend!

School’s Out by Alice Cooper
The favorite two words of any school aged child. Not to mention a pretty sweet song to head bang to.

Dancin’ In the Street by Martha and the Vandellas
If you don’t feel the urge to literally dance in the streets to this song there’s something wrong.

Summertime by Kenny Chesney
This is my summer ringtone.

Saturday in the Park by Chicago
Saturday in the park…I think it was the Fourth of July. Does it get any more summery than the Fourth of July?

These last two songs are both songs about baseball. And if baseball doesn’t remind you of the summer not only have I decided you’re a summer hater, I’ve also decided you’re un-American.

Cheap Seats by Alabama

Centerfield by John Fogerty
